Things to do on the Garden Route

The Garden Route is arguably the most popular and stunning place to visit in South Africa. Stretching approximately 300 kilometers down the southern coast, the Garden Route features beaches, mountains, forests, wildlife, and undeniably memorable drives.

Planning a trip to the Garden Route and looking for the best activities? This article gives you a comprehensive overview of what to do there so that you can have the best time possible.

Why Visit Garden Route?

The Garden Route’s greatest attribute is the incredible amount of diversity contained within a small space. You can spend a few days exploring sandy beaches, imposing mountains, dense, green forests, while also keeping an eye out for some interesting animals. This aspect means that if you’re traveling as part of a group of people or as a couple, you should have more than enough variety to keep everyone happy on your trip.

As a location, it is so much more than just a place to visit, with both adventurous activities and opportunities for relaxation, making it perfect for a holiday experience you will never forget.

Top 15 Unforgettable Experiences in the things to do on the garden route

1. Visit Tsitsikamma National Park

The Tsitsikamma National Park features suspension bridges that you can walk over, as well as beautiful coastal walking trails and gorgeous ocean views. It’s perfect if you like the outdoors and enjoy nature.

I did some hiking in Tsitsikamma, and walking over the suspension bridge is such a memorable experience. Nature lovers, this is a must! I think it’s even more tranquil in the morning.

2. Cross the Storms River Suspension Bridge

If you’re looking for something a little adventurous, walk over the Storms River suspension bridge above the crashing waves below. It’s the perfect activity for those seeking a bit of a thrill.

Unbelievable to look down at the waves as we crossed the bridge; truly something I’ll remember, and it was one of the highlights of this entire experience. Great for thrill-seekers, but in my opinion, not ideal to attempt with a bike, let alone small children.

3. Check out Knysna Heads

Knysna Heads offer majestic cliffs with stunning views where the lagoon meets the sea and where you can enjoy some unforgettable sunsets. The scene, while the sun was setting, I could not even click a photo of it, I just kept it in my eyes. It is suggested by me that one can visit during the sunrise or sunset. And carry a DSLR camera too

4. Unwind in Plettenberg Bay

This picturesque village offers stunning beaches, the opportunity to spot some dolphins, and a laid-back vibe. Perfect for travelers who want a calm and restful experience. It was fun to see the dolphins from the beach. The village is small, but it has a great atmosphere to unwind. If you’d like to relax for a day or two, you can try staying here and eating at the seafood restaurants, too.

If you do go, make sure to post the review about the seafood restaurant in the comments box for my post!

5. Hike in Robberg Nature Reserve

Robberg Nature Reserve is home to clifftop trails with incredible views of the ocean and seabirds. There are many sections that can be explored, which may also feature a population of seals depending on when you visit. When you’re up at the Clifftop Trail, you will have some fantastic views out at the sea, but you can also view the seal colony. When hiking, remember to pack some lightweight trainers and a bottle of water. It is a good idea to hike early in the morning so you don’t have to put up with any crowds.

6. Explore Cango Caves

Located near Oudtshoorn, the Cango Caves are some of the oldest cave systems in the world, featuring amazing rock formations, and are one of the biggest attractions in South Africa.

The rock formations in the Cango Caves are absolutely stunning, and through the tour guide, I learned a little of the history as well. When you go, you must  wear comfy shoes and take a jacket as it is really cold in the cave. I’d recommend arriving early, as there will be fewer people there, and you can really take your time getting some lovely photos.

7. Experience Oudtshoorn

The capital of the Klein Karoo, Oudtshoorn, is also the ostrich farming capital and a good place to experience some of the region’s culture. I really had an enjoyable time in Oudtshoorn, especially visiting an ostrich farm and the local culture. If you do join a farm tour, join a guided tour. It will be fun and safe. This is how I was there. And if you like, go to the local market to get some genuine Klein Karoo souvenirs.

8. Drive through Wilderness National Park

Within the Wilderness National Park, you can take the scenic drive, canoe on the lagoon, enjoy some birdwatching, and unwind surrounded by nature.

9. Make a Stop at Mossel Bay

Mossel Bay has a great blend of history, amazing beaches, and adventurous activities such as diving with sharks.

10. GO WHALE WATCHING IN HERMANUS

Between June and December, Hermanus is one of the most popular locations in the world to spot the southern right whales that feed in the waters.

This secluded region of nature features natural, unspoiled beaches, a calm ocean, and stunning green vegetation that makes for the perfect location to relax and forget your troubles.

12. Explore Knysna Waterfront

Enjoy a nice meal, do some souvenir shopping, or just enjoy the peaceful vibes as you relax on the waterfront next to the lagoon.

13. Go canoeing in Wilderness Lagoon

A wonderful, peaceful location for an hour or so in a hired canoe. Gliding across the calm lagoon with only the sounds of nature to keep you company just me time.

Canoeing is very peaceful, and being out in nature is excellent. You are required to wear a life jacket and the best weather to go is a calm day. Paddling in the early morning hours offers more chances to see wildlife. This is from personal experience.

14. Visit Bloukrans Bridge (Bungee Jump)

Bloukrans Bridge is the site of the highest bungee jump in the world, where you can jump off the cliff face to get the thrill of a lifetime and a view you will never forget! Amazing experience ever to have taken the world’s highest jump, bungee jumping! It was my first attempt at it. So if you are an adventurer, this is a must-do. Do check the safety gear in an appropriate manner. Though you cannot carry a camera, select the video option to record it.

15. Take the scenic drive from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth

The road trip from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth is amazing. With plenty of stops, you’ll not want to miss anything on this truly unforgettable road trip.

The road trip was wonderful, and I was able to do everything at each stop. Make sure to have a GPS or an offline map with you and time for each main stop.
Extra Hint: Have water and snacks to be more comfortable on the long drive
